Recent Identity Theft Scam Targets Seniors

Carey K. SteffenIdentity theft is continuing to occur.  A new scam that the American Bar Association recently made us aware of is with regard to Kentucky Medicare.  It has been reported by the Kentucky Attorney General’s office that seniors in Kentucky are receiving “fraudulent phone calls asking for personal infomation so that new Medicare cards may be issued to the consumers.”  The perpetrator, calling from 866-234-2255, claims to represent Medicare or the Social Security office and asks the senior to verify or provide personal information that could lead to identity theft.

The lesson to be learned here is that consumers should never verify personal information such as social security numbers or date of birth to someone who has called them.  If you receive a call as described above, you should hang up and call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or Medicare at 1-800-Medicare.  You can’t be too safe with your personal information!
