Living Options for Seniors

Mollie T. Stegman, Esq.Seniors have several options when it comes to housing.  Some of these options are:

Assisted Living Facility –  This type of living option provides additional assistance to those seniors who need some help with daily living activities. Assisted living facilities fall between independent living and nursing homes.  Most Assisted living Facilities offer 24 hour supervision and various support services, such as assistance with eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, administration of medicines, etc.  The goal of Assisted Living Facilities is to provide the individual with as much autonomy as possible.   In most cases, this option is less then the cost of a Nursing Home Facility.

Nursing Home Facility — This type of living option is ideal for those individuals that are not able to care for themselves and who require 24 hour care due to a medical condition and/or deteriorating health.

Independent Living Facility — This type of facility is ideal for the elderly individual who is able to live independently, but who no longer wants to maintain a residence, and wishes to live with others their age so they can interact socially with fellow residents.

Often times Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Home Facilties and Independent Living Facilities are connected together in a Continuing Care Retirement Community.  These facilities are often ideal for individuals, as they offer a full range of services and the transition between each type of facility is easier.
